About the National Explorers Society
The National Explorers Society is an independent research organization devoted to the systematic exploration of under-investigated natural, historical, and cultural places and phenomena. We seek to elevate both traditional scientific methods and the emerging field of synchrological inquiry—giving equal weight to causal investigation and meaningful co-occurrence in the pursuit of a better understanding of the natural world.
Through fieldwork, archival research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the Society works to establish a new standard of transparency, intellectual rigor, and curiosity within the global exploration community.
Unlike many institutions that restrict themselves to a narrow academic discipline, the National Explorers Society recognizes that discovery often occurs at the intersection of fields. Archaeology, history, anthropology, geology, cultural study, and the study of unexplained phenomena all contribute valuable perspectives to the exploration of our world. The Society therefore encourages cooperation across disciplines, allowing investigators to pursue questions that might otherwise remain unexplored.
The Society’s work is organized through several departments and initiatives, each focused on a different aspect of research, publication, and public engagement.
The Enigma Research Unit
The Enigma Research Unit serves as the Society’s investigative division dedicated to examining historical mysteries, unexplained phenomena, and anomalies that fall outside the traditional boundaries of academic research.
Members of the Unit approach such subjects with disciplined skepticism and methodological care. The purpose of the Enigma Research Unit is not to sensationalize unusual claims, but to examine them carefully—documenting the historical record, evaluating available evidence, and identifying where genuine mysteries remain unresolved.
The Unit frequently collaborates with historians, scientists, and field researchers to bring clarity to subjects that have long been obscured by speculation or misinformation.
The Egyptology Papers
The Egyptology Papers is the Society’s flagship podcast and publication platform devoted to the archaeology, history, and culture of ancient Egypt.
Each episode explores specific questions within Egyptian history—ranging from architectural analysis of the pyramids to the broader intellectual traditions that shaped the civilization of the Nile Valley. Drawing upon academic research, field reports, and historical sources, the program aims to make serious scholarship accessible to a wider audience without sacrificing intellectual rigor.
The program also highlights new research, revisits historical debates within Egyptology, and places modern discoveries in conversation with the long tradition of exploration that began in the nineteenth century.
Explorers Bookstore
The Explorers Bookstore serves as the Society’s literary arm and public gateway to the world of exploration scholarship.
Operated through Curious Owl Bookshop in North Carolina, the bookstore curates works related to exploration, archaeology, history, cryptozoology, anthropology, and scientific discovery. In addition to contemporary scholarship, the collection highlights classic works of exploration literature that have shaped the way the modern world understands discovery and investigation.
Through the bookstore, readers can access both the foundational texts of exploration and the latest research emerging from investigators around the world.
Research Philosophy
Central to the Society’s work is the recognition that not all meaningful patterns in the world can be explained through direct causal mechanisms alone.
Traditional science excels at identifying cause and effect relationships, yet many experiences and observations appear to involve forms of meaningful coincidence that resist conventional explanation. The National Explorers Society therefore supports research conducted within the framework of the Synchrological Paradigm, a disciplined approach to investigating patterns of meaningful co-occurrence that may reveal new ways of understanding complex systems.
Rather than replacing scientific method, synchrological inquiry complements it—allowing investigators to examine patterns, correlations, symbolism, and intentional structures that traditional methodologies may overlook.
By combining empirical investigation with careful pattern recognition, the Society seeks to broaden the intellectual tools available to modern researchers.
Membership
The National Explorers Society welcomes individuals who share a passion for discovery, intellectual curiosity, and the responsible investigation of the unknown.
Membership provides access to Society publications, research briefings, and special initiatives connected to the Society’s various investigative divisions. Members also receive invitations to participate in collaborative research projects, lectures, and Society programs as they develop.
Those interested in joining the Society may apply for membership through the Society’s membership program, where explorers, researchers, writers, and enthusiasts alike contribute to the ongoing work of discovery.
A Continuing Tradition of Exploration
For centuries, exploration has expanded humanity’s understanding of the world—from the mapping of unknown coastlines to the deciphering of ancient civilizations. Yet vast areas of inquiry still remain.
The National Explorers Society exists to pursue those unanswered questions with discipline, humility, and curiosity.
In an age when much of the world appears already mapped, the Society remains committed to the idea that true exploration has never been limited to geography alone. It also lies in the careful investigation of history, the rediscovery of forgotten knowledge, and the patient examination of mysteries that have yet to yield their meaning.
The work of exploration continues.
